Inala Road Upgrade Moves Forward After Years of Safety Concerns

Construction has been announced for the Archerfield Road, Azalea Street and Pine Road intersection upgrade in Inala, bringing a long-awaited road safety project closer to completion after years of community concerns and repeated calls for improvements.

Inala MP Margie Nightingale announced that works commenced on 12 October 2026, with completion expected in late 2027. Brisbane City Council had previously brought forward the construction timetable from early 2027 to late 2026 for the intersection, which carries approximately 22,000 vehicles daily.

Years of pressure for safer roads

The intersection, located between Inala and Richlands within Forest Lake Ward, has long attracted concerns about traffic congestion, turning movements and pedestrian safety. Residents previously organised a petition calling for traffic lights, adding to pressure for improvements at the busy junction.

Earlier proposals had not progressed to construction. A 2026 Forest Lake Ward infrastructure report identified three previous intersection designs developed over approximately a decade without works proceeding.

The latest project followed community consultation in October 2025, including information sessions at Inala Plaza and Richlands Plaza. Feedback highlighted difficult turning movements, traffic delays and concerns about pedestrian access and construction disruption.

Traffic signals and new pedestrian crossings

The final design includes traffic signals, dedicated turning lanes and two northbound lanes intended to reduce queuing. Pedestrian crossings, accessible ramps and new walking and cycling connections are also planned, alongside drainage and underground service upgrades.

Brisbane City Council considered a roundabout but found that traffic signals would better accommodate existing traffic volumes. A roundabout would also require substantially more land.

Almost $6 million committed to intersection works

The Australian Government committed $3 million through its Black Spot Program, which funds improvements at locations identified as road safety risks. Brisbane City Council committed a further $2,921,500, bringing the announced funding contributions to approximately $5.92 million.

The federally supported works include traffic signals, drainage and lighting improvements. The project was recommended through the Queensland Black Spot Consultative Panel under the 2026–27 funding round.

Traffic delays and night works expected

According to Nightingale’s construction announcement, motorists may experience reduced speed limits, changed traffic conditions and delays while works are underway. Some night works are also expected, although specific lane closure and diversion dates were not listed on Council’s main project page as of 13 October.

The project also includes relocating or upgrading underground water, electrical and communications infrastructure. Council’s August 2026 update confirmed that construction had been scheduled for late 2026, with completion expected in late 2027.
