Lakes International Language Academy recently received a grant to purchase a classroom set of ukuleles as part of a “Music for Well-Being” project for the lower school’s grades K to 5 at the main campus in Forest Lake. The LILA music department chose to request funding for ukuleles because the ukulele is small and easy to hold, and with just four soft strings, it is often easier than other stringed instruments for young students to play.
“Ukuleles are accessible for students with difficulty holding instruments and students who struggle with attention, focus, or learning in general,” LILA music instructor Carlos Pilan said in a press release. “Research shows that music engages the entire brain, especially when the person is actively involved in making the music through singing or playing an instrument. We think ukuleles will be a fantastic addition to our program for everyone.”broadstreet.zone(48036);

The Scandia Marine Lion’s Foundation is challenging the community to donate to the Hurricane Disaster Relief Fund. The foundation will match all donations up to $1,000. All donations will be used to benefit victims of hurricanes in Houston, Florida, and Puerto Rico, and will be distributed through Lion’s Club International Foundation Disaster Relief Fund.
All donations are tax deductable and the challenge will end on Oct 9, 2017.

Forest Lake Area High School seniors Noelle Gorka, Gabriel Robertson and Katherine Taylor have been named Commended Students in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program.
These seniors are among 34,000 students across the nation that have been recognized for their academic promise; however, they will not be continuing in the 2018 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards.
Of the 1.6 million students who entered the 2018 competition by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, the commended students placed among the top 50,000 scorers. Each student will receive a Letter of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

On Sept. 21, Forest Lake Area School Board members discussed in detail spending priorities should voters approve a per pupil levy increase in a special election Nov. 7 The district is proposing a two-question referendum that would revoke the existing operating referendum revenue authorization of $461.67 per student and replace it with $1,211.67 per student. The other question would authorize $9 million in bonding authority for athletic field and arts facility improvements.
The bond request was scrutinized by Department of Education Commissioner Brenda Casselius and her team based on a series of criteria including geographic area and population, a list of existing school facilities, a list of specific deficiencies, a thorough description of the project, and a specification of the source of project funding. The Wyoming Public Works will be involved in a water main and hydrant flushing program starting Monday October 9th, 2017 and continuing through the week of October 16th, 2017. This notice is to inform our customers that the flushing and valve operation will cause some areas to be without water for short periods of time and a decrease in pressure which may affect automatic flushing and pressure sensitive equipment. Residents may also notice mineral particles in their water that can affect laundry operations. If mineral particles are detected, cold water should be run to clear out household water lines. Two years ago, I found a steal of a deal for a round-trip flight to Philadelphia: $29.54, to be specific. As someone who loves adventure, it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. Much to the dismay and worry of my mother, I boarded the flight without any official plans other than a place to crash at night. I toured around Philadelphia’s center city in excitement and awe as the history books I had once read came to life in front of me that day. The next day, I picked up a bus ticket to Washington D.C. and traveled to our nation’s capital. Touring around that day opened my eyes to just how much our nation has been through and just how much it still has left to see.
