Big Carnelian public access to close this fall
The public boat access on Big Carnelian Lake near Marine on St. Croix will close for a period of time this fall to allow for major reconstruction.
The project includes improved storm water management, addition of an aquatic invasive species boat inspection and cleaning area, a new boat ramp, and new bituminous surfacing for the parking lots and the driveway to the access. Exact dates will depend on the contractor’s schedule, but work is planned to begin sometime in late September, and it should be completed by Nov. 1.broadstreet.zone(48036);
“We apologize for any inconvenience boaters may experience,” DNR Parks and Trails area supervisor Nancy Stewart said in a press release. “There’s really no ideal time for doing this kind of access rehabilitation. The fall works best for us because water levels are lowest and we avoid the busy summer season.”
Funding for the $245,000 project comes from dedicated state and federal funds used
FL FFA named Reserve Grand Champion at Minnesota State Fair
The Forest Lake FFA took Reserve Grand Champion honors at the 2017 Minnesota State Fair for their competitive landscape display. Students constructed the 14’ by 14’ display and selected plants highlighting this year’s theme, “Sun & Shade.”
“The Forest Lake FFA Chapter has been very competitive in the Landscape Design exhibit at the Minnesota State Fair for several years,” agriculture teacher Veronica Ward said in a press release. “The students really enjoy the challenge and it is a great way for us to showcase the work of our members during the fair!”broadstreet.zone(48036);
This project is an extension of classroom instruction as the display is evaluated on artistic design principles, identification of plant material with growth and care information, and quality of construction. The award winning exhibit was on display throughout the state fair on the east side of the CHS Miracle of Birth Center and FFA Leadership Center. Plants, materials, and expertise

Annexation request denied for family on FLAS border
Submitted photoJoe Kiesling recently petitioned for his property, the location of which is circled on this map, to be annexed into the Mahtomedi school district. His neighbors to the south and directly across the street are already in that district and he wants to see his grandchildren join the other neighborhood kids in the Mahtomedi schools. The Forest Lake Area School Board denied the request.
A detachment request filed by a resident who lives on the border of the Forest Lake and Mahtomedi school districts was a source of some controversy Sept. 8 as school board members questioned, discussed, and ultimately denied the measure.
Joe Kiesling lives on Homestead Ave. N. in Hugo and his property is in the Forest Lake Area School District, albeit right on the line. Several houses to the south of the Kiesling property as well as directly across the street are in the Mahtomedi Public School District.
