A rotating schedule of bird hikes will be in Washington County Parks in 2017, with the next one from 9 to 10 a.m. Aug. 5 at Big Marine Park Reserve. Guests can meet at the playground and park at the playground lot.
This program will help interested parties learn to identify the birds that call the St. Croix Valley home and contribute to citizen science data collection by completing bird count surveys with the guide. The surveys collected will assist the county’s natural resources team and related work in conjunction with the Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Fund grant.broadstreet.zone(48036);
Additional one-hour guided hikes will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Sept. 9 at St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park, Oct. 14 at Big Marine Park Reserve, Nov. 18 at Pine Point Park, and Dec. 9 at Lake Elmo Park Reserve. For Washington County park locations, visit www.co.washington.mn.us/parks. Under

Asphalt plant consideration will continue
The Columbus City Council decided to table until a later meeting discussion of a preliminary plat application for an asphalt plant in the city after the applicant, Bituminous Roadways, requested time to amend text in the application regarding the plant, outdoor storage, and a sewer hookup.
Despite the tabling, several people in the audience still wanted to weigh in on the plant, including Running Aces. Representation from the casino and racetrack presented a petition from people who didn’t want the plant in the area, adding the organization’s position that the dust and noise from the plant, which is roughly two miles from Running Aces, would adversely affect the well-being of the racetrack’s horses.broadstreet.zone(48036);
Others present at the meeting also spoke against the plant. At one point, Mayor Dave Povolny told the audience that he wanted to make his decision based on the facts at hand. Some in the audience responded that they
Linwood board frustrated with blight
Amy Doeun
Linwood Reporter
Supervisor Mike Halliday brought a long-standing complaint from an area resident to the Linwood Town Board at the board’s July 11 meeting. Complaints began back in 2008. Halliday said the complaints cover “numerous properties in a couple block area” on 225th and 226th Avenue.broadstreet.zone(48036);
“There is some interesting stuff going on there,” he said. “We had conversations with residents, and normally not a lot happens.”
The complaints include difficulty getting through the streets due to obstruction as well as unkempt or junk-laden yards.
Halliday went on to say that last year, the town took seven residents to court “on different accounts, and they were all thrown out – that is what we are trying to avoid.”
The town is looking into how best to proceed with the situation.
“The township has been too lenient,” Supervisor Tim Peterson said. “There are fire pits right on the road because there is no room in the
The most awful pain of my life
This column has one purpose: to help you avoid the most intense, excruciating pain I’ve ever experienced in my almost 68 years of life – from kidney stones.
In an online video, Dr. William Haley, a Mayo Clinic physician, calls this pain “legendary.”broadstreet.zone(48036);
A Health Partners nurse, whose name I’ve unfortunately lost, who had given birth and had kidney stones agreed that “the pain of kidney stones was worse.” Fortunately, there are simple, cheap ways to dramatically decrease the likelihood that you’ll experience kidney stones.
Before explaining what doctors recommend, let’s go back to the late December 2016 day when suddenly I knew something was really wrong. I was at a meeting when I felt a strong pain below my stomach.
I drove myself to a local hospital, which turned out to be a mistake; hospital staff told me that people who arrived in ambulances were a higher priority for treatment. I was hoping
