Jim Harley Jr., age 81, of Forest Lake, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2017 after a short battle with leukemia.
Retiree of The Bureau of Engraving and Harley Automotive. Jim was an outdoorsman. He enjoyed boating and snowmobiling, but most of all, spending time with his family. He also volunteered at Calvary Cemetery and the Church of St. Peter.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Bridie; wife, Jan; grandson-in-law, Chad Hansen.
He is survived by his wife, Emilie; children, Maureen (Doug) Kiekhafer, Barbara (Jeff Werth), Jim (Lori), Cheryl Cook, John (Stacey) Cook; grandchildren, Rachel (Don) LeRoux, Jacquie (Dan) Undem, Blake, Brett, Chase, Matt (Alecia), Lauren, Hannah, Christian, Hailey; great-grandchildren, Lydia, Ava, Maddie, Katie, Eleanor, Carson, Jaelyn, Addy; brother, Jack; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Sophia Reneé Fleming, age 15, of Forest Lake, passed away peacefully, while surrounded by family on Sunday, July 16, 2017.
She is survived by her mom, Lisa Fleming (fiancé, Eric Hermansen); dad, Russ (Jeri Parkin) Fleming; brother, Jackson Fleming; grandparents, Dean andEllie Funk of Brooklyn Park, Henry and Irene Fleming of Flagstaff, AZ; many other relatives and friends.
Funeral Service 2 p.m., Friday, July 21, 2017 at Faith Lutheran Church, 886 North Shore Drive, Forest Lake. Visitation 4-8 p.m., Thursday, July 20, 2017 at Mattson Funeral Home, 343 North Shore Drive, Forest Lake. Visitation also one hour prior to service at the church. Interment at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Forest Lake. Memorials are preferred to the family. Please plant a tree in Sophie’s honor.

Bikers to raise soldier suicide awareness

Submitted photoThe Bikers Against Soldier Suicide bike run and festival will take place July 22 and end at the VFW in Forest Lake.
Mike Doughty, or “Selfie” as he is known among his biker friends, has a special spot in his heart for the sacrifice that members of the armed forces make. He is also very aware of some of the struggles they face when they return home from active duty.
“As members of the Second Brigade Motorcycle Club, we ride for our veterans,” he said. “We ride to honor their sacrifice and support the memory of those we have lost.”broadstreet.zone(48036);
One of the main fundraising events of the year for the Second Brigade is the Bikers Against Soldier Suicide bike run. This year, the event will be held July 22 and end in Forest Lake.

Norma A. Johnson

Loving Mom, Grandma, Nana and SisterNorma Johnson, age 89, of Forest Lake, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on July 18, 2017.
Norma’s deep faith in the Lord was the foundation that carried her through life’s journey. Her greatest pleasure was to enjoy time spent with family and friends. Her love for competitive games found her playing cribbage and Wii bowling. Bingo, Farkle, and all card games filled her days and brought her joy.
Preceded in death by husband, Norman; son-in-law, Rex George; siblings, June Koester, Bonnie Johnson, Kenneth Baker.

Thomas “Tom” E. Whalen

Loving husband, dad and grandpa
Thomas E. Whalen, age 84 of Linwood, MN died peacefully on July 15, 2017.
Preceded in death by son-in-law, Glenn Bohnen.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Florence, and their children, Terrie Bohnen, Glen, Todd, Jennifer (Doug) Bender; six grandchildren, Matthew Bohnen (Jodi), Christine Berg (Guy Humphrey), Melissa Gnerer (Andy), Michael Whalen, Daniel Bender, Andrew Bender; nine great-grandchildren, Chandler, Tyler, Matthew, Emilee, Grace, Brayden, Hannah, Madeline, Brook; three sisters, Colleen (Richard) Bachmeier, Joy (Roger) Nellessen, Annette Howard; and other extended family.
He proudly served his country in the United States Marines and was a veteran of the Korean War. His passions in life were…woodworking, camping, fishing, walking in the woods, spending time in Grand Marais, MN, and the love of his family.
