One year in, YMCA feels community support
Photos by Ryan HowardAmong the pleasant surprises experienced by the Forest Lake YMCA in its first year of existence is the number of teens who use the facility’s exercise and weight-lifting equipment, an anomaly for Ys in the Twin Cities metro area.
As the Forest Lake YMCA approaches its one-year anniversary in the city, the organization’s local team is reflecting on how the facility has exceeded expectations while looking ahead at future goals.
“It’s been a really good first year,” said Sharna Braucks, the executive director of the Ys in both Forest Lake and Lino Lakes. “I think it really shows the community need that was there.”broadstreet.zone(48036);

Massey 83rd in state golf

Forest Lake junior Quinn Massey finished 83rd in the Class AAA boys golf championship at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids June 13-14.broadstreet.zone(48036);
Massey struggled on the West nine in the first round, carding 47, before finding a rhythm on the East nine (42) to finish the round at 89.
On day two, Massey improved his West score to 41 and shot 42 again on the East, to come home with a grand total of 172 strokes.
Massey qualified for the state tournament by winning a playoff hole at the Section 7AAA championships. He was one of the top golfers in the Suburban East Conference and was named to the all-conference squad.
Massey will be one of three varsity returners when the Rangers hit the links again in 2018.

Richard “Dick” D. Tibbetts
Richard “Dick” Tibbetts, age 72, of Scandia, died unexpectedly on June 10, 2017.
Dick proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
His career was spent as a carpenter in heavy construction and he was a member of St. Paul Carpenter’s Local 322.
Preceded in death by his son, Neil; brothers, sister, parents, parents-in-law; and sister-in-law.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Marva; daughter, Brenda (Mike); grandson, Dan; granddaughters, Michaela, Mackenzie; brother, Steve; sister, Mary (David); best buddy, Eddy; extended family; and many friends.
Private family services will be held. Interment at St. Thomas Cemetery, Aitkin. Memorials may be made to the family for future designation.
