Bridging a ‘grand’ gap
Submitted photoPrincipal Curtis Slater addresses some of the more than 725 grandparents who attended Grandparent’s Day at Wyoming Elementary May 30.
May 30 was a big day for Wyoming Elementary as more than 725 grandparents and “grandfriends” – elderly friends of students who aren’t actually related but who fill a grandparent-like role in their lives – visited the school to spend time with the children. The event, brought back in 2016 after a long hiatus, was a hit among students and staff alike.
“Grandparents Day is a day to invite important people into our school that show so much support to students,” Principal Curtis Slater said. “We want to bridge the connection between two aspects of students’ lives. It’s an opportunity to share day-to-day life and accomplishments students are proud of at school.”broadstreet.zone(48036);

Columbus discusses senior center renovations
Julie Parent
Columbus Reporter
The Columbus City Council discussed proposed senior center renovations during its May 24 meeting. The council originally received an estimate to do all of the cleaning and repairs the senior citizens requested for $14,149. The council asked for a second estimate, which was $5,171, to do some of the cleaning and repairs that were on the original list. The amount was still too high to do everything on the list. The seniors did not think their expectations to complete the work were unreasonable. However, the city cannot legally spend more for senior center expenses than the $3,600 of rent money it collects in one year. Mayor Dave Povolny suggested the seniors sign a two-year lease for $7,200. Then, the cleaning and repairs estimated at $5,171 could be completed. The people representing the senior center at the meeting agreed.broadstreet.zone(48036);

Faith Lutheran celebrates capital campaign success
In early 2017, leadership at Faith Lutheran identified three key needs critical to the long term health of the church. Audio visual upgrades will allow church leaders to provide meaningful and relevant worship opportunities for all, a mortgage buy down will free up money for ministry, and an operating reserve will prepare for contingencies. To model good stewardship, church leaders are committed to tithing 10 percent of money raised from the capital campaign to provide mission grants for the community.
In three months, the church body has raised $106,000 and is 42 percent of the way to the goal of $250,800. $96,000 will fund sanctuary audio visual upgrades, and a tithe of $9,600 will assist in funding a mission grant program.broadstreet.zone(48036);
Currently, the focus is on the mortgage buy down goal of $100,000 and an additional tithe of $10,000.
