Girls golf dominates Section 7AAA, advances to state

Another week, another championship. For the third year in a row, the Forest Lake girls golf team won the Section 7AAA championship and will compete for a state title. The Rangers shot 614 over two days to decimate the field; of the teams that made the second-day cut, Elk River finished closest, 80 strokes behind with 694. Junior Maija Tanberg finished as the overall medalist (149), followed closely by seniors Hannah Kohls (150) and Maddy Messin (151). All six Rangers placed in the top 12 in a field of 68, with sophomore Brooke Odland (172, seventh), senior Anna Schmidtke (173, 8th) and sophomore Emma Schaffer rounding out the Forest Lake entry (178, 12th). The Rangers now move on to the Class AAA state championship, set for Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids June 13-14.

Boys golf: Massey is statebound

When the best high school golfers in Minnesota convene for the Class AAA state championship next week, Forest Lake junior Quinn Massey will be among them.
At the Section 7AAA championship at the Hinckley Grand National June 1 and 3, Massey shot a 75 in round one and a 74 in round two to finish with 149 strokes, placing him in a five-way tie for fourth among individuals. With five berths at state available, the tied golfers had to contest a series of playoff holes.broadstreet.zone(48036);
Massey claimed his state berth early, scoring a birdie on the first playoff hole.
Ben Johnson (Andover) won the individual title with 142 strokes. Elk River claimed the team berth to state with 601.

Lacrosse teams fall in playoffs
By coincidence, the Forest Lake boys and girls lacrosse teams both drew matchups with Hermantown/Proctor in the first round of their respective Section 7 playoffs. The No. 11 boys made the trip up north May 30 and were eliminated 14-6. The boys finished the year with three wins and 12 losses. The No. 7 girls defeated Hermantown/Proctor 15-5 on the same day to advance to the quarterfinal round, where they were beaten 11-10 in overtime by No. 2 Centennial 11-10 on June 1. Barger hits a hole-in-one
Forest Lake resident Tony Barger sank his drive on the par-3 15th hole at Falcon Ridge Golf Course on May 28. Barger used an eight-iron to score his ace from 177 yards away.
