Kenneth P. Schaffer, age 73, of Wyoming, passed away suddenly on February 28, 2017.
Ken was a proud U.S. Navy Veteran of the Vietnam War and had worked for American National Can for 36 years.
Preceded in death by parents, Clarence “Gus” and Helen.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Beverly; son, Brad (Carol) Hanson; granddaughters, Misty and Nicole; siblings, Robert (Wanda), Kathleen Nicolai, Kris (Denny) Bray; many nieces, nephews and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Monday, March 6, 2017 at The Church of St. Peter, 1250 South Shore Drive, Forest Lake. Visitation 9:30-10:30 a.m., Monday at Mattson Funeral Home, 343 North Shore Drive, Forest Lake. Interment at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the family.
Marceen Marie Kopp
Marceen Marie Kopp, age 52, of Columbus, passed away at home on February 27, 2017, after a brave battle with ovarian cancer.
Marcee enjoyed spending weekends at the cabin and camping, and had an overall love of nature. She also liked crossword puzzles, sudoku, and reading, but most of all, Marcee loved spending time with her family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Mary Waataja.
She is survived by her loving husband of 33 years, Brian; children, Jessica (Tyler) Anderson, Bradley (Audrey) Kopp; granddaughters, Naomi, Noelle, Natalie; sister, Vicki (Scott) Weber; brother, Ronald (Sue) Waataja; several nieces, a nephew, and close friends.

After warm temperatures decimated the lake ice in the two weeks before the Forest Lake Rotary’s annual Winter Plunge, the Rotary’s permit to hold the plunge on the ice of Forest Lake was pulled by Washington County a few days before the event. Determined to continue the event, for the first time in the plunge’s eight-year history, the event was held on land Feb. 25, with participants jumping into a large, cooled pool set up in Lakeside Memorial Park. Plunge co-organizer Blake Roberts told The Times the plunge was on track this year to exceed $1 million in donations over the entire history of the event. When I read the article in last Thursday’s paper titled “District hopes for funding gap relief,” I was interested. This interest quickly turned to dismay as I read through the piece. I would like to address some concerns that were articulated by School Board members in the article.broadstreet.zone(48036);
As a former educator and high school wrestling coach myself, I have made a conscious effort to be in frequent contact with teachers from our area, the School Board and the Forest Lake School District’s administration regarding how we can help our district with funding shortfalls. I have held several meetings over the last three months to gather input leading up to this legislative session, which have been profitable and resulted in ideas for new legislation.
