Editorial: Lawmakers must approve adequate school funding
Gov. Mark Dayton has proposed a vigorous funding budget for education for the next two years. It’s a proposal that deserves serious consideration by state lawmakers.broadstreet.zone(48036);
The proposal includes money for additional pre-K scholarships and student support staff, funding of the special education cross subsidy, funding to offset increases in district contributions to the teacher retirement fund, as well as several smaller provisions for targeted projects.
The cornerstone of the proposal is an increase in the general education per-pupil formula of 2 percent for each year of the biennium, a total of $371 million. These are the dollars needed to maintain the current programs in which students are enrolled. In actual dollars, the proposal would add $121 in per-pupil funding in the first year and an additional $124 in the second year of biennium. The per-pupil funding amount would increase from the current $6,067 to $6,312 in fiscal year 2019.

Girls hockey to challenge Elk River for section championship
Madi Nolan takes aim with her game-tying shot in the third period.
Although the Forest Lake girls hockey team had beaten Grand Rapids/Greenway 6-0 on Jan. 14, head coach Todd Gutterman said he expected a much stronger challenge when the two teams met in a Section 7AA semifinal match on Feb. 11. He also predicted that one goal would separate the two state-ranked squads.
It turns out, Gutterman knew what he was talking about: The Rangers took an early lead, the Lightning stormed ahead in the second period, and the Rangers tied things up with a stunning third-period goal before winning the game in overtime, 5-4.broadstreet.zone(48036);
“(GRG) is a great hockey club,” Gutterman said. “I’m very proud of our kids; we persevered.”
Freshman Brooke Remington and junior Kayla Kasel scored first-period goals to put the Rangers up 2-0, though GRG’s Ty Bischoff pulled one back late in the period. Ranger goaltender Josie Bothun and

As the heart of February approaches, the playoffs loom for winter athletes in Forest Lake. Alpine skiing, Nordic skiing and girls hockey have already begun their sectional journeys; for other Ranger teams, the postseason is just around the corner.
– Gymnastics will have home floor advantage for the Section 7AA meet on Saturday, Feb. 18. The Rangers finished 5-3 in conference duals, with a top score of 140.75. At an individual all-around invitational, they put up an unofficial score of 144.3. If they can match or beat that mark, they will have a chance to unseat Cambridge-Isanti, the seven-time defending section champions, for the berth to the state meet. Even if the Rangers

Harmony’s catchbroadstreet.zone(48036);
Harmony Anderson, 7, of Scandia, was ice fishing with her father Nathaniel Anderson on Second Lake on Sunday, Feb. 5, when she snagged this 16-inch crappie. Harmony was using a line baited with a crappie minnow from Mike’s Bait on 8, and she pulled in her catch after “a pretty big fight,” in the words of her grandfather, Tim Anderson. The family was undecided as to the eventual disposition of Harmony’s catch, but they were leaning toward having it mounted for display.
Money raised for Be the Match
A silent auction held in conjunction with Cancer Awareness Night at the Forest Lake girls basketball game raised $868 for Be the Match in honor of Brent Bostrom, father of Ranger basketball alumna Rachel Bostrom and an avid basketball supporter. The family was recognized at center court before the varsity game on Feb. 9. From left are Lydia, Brent, Jan, Rachel and Sam

Diminishing snow won’t stop snowmobile club
Submitted photoDon Halvorsen, a member of the Forest Lake Snowmobile Club since 1969, helps Colleen Slattery, food shelf coordinator at Community Helping Hand, unpack food items collected by the club during a holiday food drive.
An unseasonably warm February has nearly eliminated the area snow cover, but that won’t stop the Forest Lake Snowmobile Club from having some fun this weekend. The next scheduled ride for club members takes place in the Ely area this weekend, and nonmembers are welcome to tag along.
The club now sports 20 family members and is hoping to see new snowmobile fans add their names to the roster.broadstreet.zone(48036);
“Our club’s primary goal is to ride,” said Jason Kuhlman, club president. “We pride ourselves on providing our members with multiple rides throughout the snow season. We have planned alternatives in the case conditions do not allow us to ride in a specific location.”
The Ely outing is on tap
