This upgrade is the fourth and final project in this year’s program, completing a series of essential road safety improvements across Brisbane.

The Inala intersection upgrade is the latest in a series of significant projects aimed at improving road safety and reducing congestion. Earlier works included upgrades at:

  • Johnson Road in Forest Lake
  • Bay Terrace and Chestnut Street in Wynnum
  • Bennetts Road, Macrossan Avenue, and Crown Street in Norman Park

About the Black Spot Program

Since the 2010-11 financial year, the Black Spot Program has successfully completed upgrades at 63 locations across Brisbane, demonstrating a strong commitment to enhancing road safety.

The Black Spot Program is a critical part of the National Road Safety Strategy, which aims to reduce the risk of crashes by implementing targeted upgrades at high-risk locations. The program focuses on:

  • Cost-effective treatments for locations with a history of casualty crashes.
  • Reducing rural road trauma in alignment with national safety policy objectives.
  • Proactive measures to address potential crash sites and other road safety concerns.

By addressing both current and potential hazards, the program works to lower the social and economic costs of road trauma.

Increased Investment in Road Safety

Starting from 1 July 2024, the Federal Government will increase its commitment to the Black Spot Program, raising funding to $150 million per year. This enhanced investment reflects the government’s dedication to reducing road injuries and fatalities across Australia.

Funding for Black Spot projects is prioritised based on the highest safety benefits identified through an annual review process. Nominations for black spot locations come from a variety of sources, including State governments and local councils, community groups and associations, road user groups and industry representatives, and individuals.

This inclusive approach ensures that the most critical areas receive attention and that community needs are met effectively.

With the completion of the Kittyhawk Avenue and Inala Avenue intersection upgrade, local residents can look forward to a safer and more efficient commute. This project, alongside others in the program, underscores the ongoing efforts to reduce the national road toll and improve safety for all road users.

The Black Spot Program continues to be a vital contributor to these efforts, providing the necessary financial support to improve hazardous locations. As a result, more people can enjoy safer travel, getting home sooner and more securely each day.

New School Planned for Growing Pallara Community Amidst Soaring Enrolment Numbers

The Pallara community, facing a surge in school enrolments, is actively planning for a new high school to accommodate the rapidly increasing number of students in the area.

The Pallara community’s growth has been accompanied by a sharp increase in school enrolments, pressuring current educational facilities to meet the demand.

The Pallara Future School Working Group, established a few years ago, has been pivotal in addressing these challenges. The group, in collaboration with the Department of Education, local school principals, P&Cs, and government representatives, is pushing for an independent evaluation of student numbers.

This initiative aims to secure a definitive plan for a new school in Pallara, ensuring the community’s educational infrastructure can cope with the expected growth.

Community Mobilisation and Support

Community support is crucial for moving forward with the educational developments in Pallara. Local residents are encouraged to participate by signing a petition either online or through physical forms distributed by supporters within the community.

The initiative seeks to gather widespread backing to affirm the need for a new high school, which will enhance educational opportunities and ensure that the future generations of Pallara have adequate learning environments.

Statewide Educational Trends

According to a recent analysis, several of Queensland’s primary schools, including Pallara State School, are set to experience substantial enrolment increases by 2027. Pallara State School alone anticipates an uptick of 472 students, bringing the total to 1600.

This trend is reflected across various schools in the Southeast, highlighting a broader regional need for expanded educational facilities.

The Queensland government is proactive in its approach to the looming capacity crisis in schools. With new schools planned and expansions underway, there is a concerted effort to ensure that all state schools, including those in Pallara, are equipped to handle the forecasted growth.

A Department of Education spokesman highlighted the government’s readiness to adapt to changing forecasts and provide necessary infrastructure enhancements to support student needs across the region.

Horror Crash in Forest Lake Leaves 5 Seriously Injured

A woman driving a Toyota LandCruiser was just metres away from her home when her vehicle collided with a Mercedes-Benz in Forest Lake, leaving five people seriously injured, according to neighbours.

Queensland Police said the two-vehicle crash occurred at the intersection of Renoir Crescent and Forest Lake Boulevard at 10:10 p.m. on Saturday, June 8th, 2024.

Speed a Possible Factor

Police are investigating whether speed contributed to the crash. Reports cited that the Mercedes-Benz allegedly travelled more than 100km/h in a 60km/h zone.

“The scene behind me, from my experience, would indicate that speed may have been a contributing factor,” a Queensland Police spokesman said.

Forest Lake local Makenzie Lynch reported that she was among the first to rush to the scene after hearing “a big bang and a big fire.” She said it was “quite horrific to look at,” adding she saw debris scattered across the road and a man hanging out of the Mercedes. Ms Lynch also stated that while she didn’t know the woman behind the wheel of the LandCruiser, she often saw her driving on the street.

One neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, said she heard “an almighty boom” during the crash. She was lying in bed, almost asleep, when she heard the loud noise and thought she would soon hear sirens, which she did shortly after.

A Queensland Police spokesman said they don’t know the exact cause of the incident, but members of the Forensic Crash Unit will attend to determine whether speed may have been a contributing factor.

Life-Threatening Injuries

Queensland Ambulance Service medical director Steve Rashford described the injuries of those involved as “life-threatening”, saying it was a very high-impact crash involving five patients who suffered a combination of life-threatening injuries, including internal bleeding and multiple fractures.

The 52-year-old female driver of the LandCruiser, who remains in serious condition in hospital, reportedly lived in the area and had just turned onto her street when the accident occurred. The 28-year-old male driver of the Mercedes-Benz, his two 22-year-old male passengers, and a 20-year-old female passenger were also taken to hospital with serious injuries.

In a Facebook post, the Queensland Ambulance Service pleaded with the public to take extra care on the roads, drive to conditions, slow down and not drink and drive after attending road trauma incidents where patients suffered life-changing injuries in the past 48 hours.

Information About the Crash

The Queensland Police Service aims to reduce the lives lost on the state’s roads. Data indicates that serious crashes can be significantly reduced when drivers recognise and avoid the ‘Fatal Five’ behaviours: speeding, drunk and drug driving, not wearing seatbelts, fatigue, and distraction.

The reference number for this incident is QP2400976166. Anyone with information for the police can contact Policelink by submitting details through the online suspicious activity form available 24 hours a day on their website or by calling 131 444. Crime information can also be reported anonymously to Crime Stoppers by calling 1800 333 000 or online at their website.

The company has signed an 11-year lease with on a 15,000sqm state-of-the-art office and warehouse facility at 2/39 Silica Street, Carole Park. The move to the purpose-built trailer manufacturing facility comes after GLT consolidated its operations from two warehouses in Crestmead, Logan.

According to GLT Chief Executive Shay Chalmers, the strategic relocation to Carole Park will allow the company to greatly expand its in-house manufacturing capabilities and have complete control over the entire production lifecycle.

Ms Chalmers explained that with the new Carole Park facility, the entire trailer production process from fabrication to repairs and painting will be conducted in-house to their high standards, with the site also featuring a wastewater treatment plant.

The new facility, previously occupied by trailer manufacturer MaxiTRANS, boasts state-of-the-art features tailored for trailer production. Industry sources estimate GLT’s lease is valued between $130 to $140 per square metre.

Whilst they had initially planned a move for 2025-26, Ms Chalmers revealed that the opportunity to acquire the custom-built Carole Park site prompted them to expedite their growth plans, executing a three-year strategy in just 12 months.

The expanded Carole Park headquarters will enable GLT to considerably increase its production capacity, staff count from the current 130, and triple its repairs operations. Ms Chalmers highlighted this as “one of the greatest milestones” in the company’s history, stating they plan to double their output in the next three years by tripling their staff and manufacturing capabilities to deliver better quality and innovation.

The fully self-contained manufacturing setup will provide GLT with enhanced quality control, increased production throughput, cost efficiencies to pass onto customers, and a dedicated research and development area to drive future trailer innovations, according to Chalmers.

Pallara State School Grapples with Traffic Chaos as Enrolment Surges

A video showing a line of over 80 cars outside Pallara State School has caught the attention of many online. Parents have shared concerns about the traffic congestion they face twice a day, and there’s acknowledgment that improvements are needed.

With a projected increase of 450 students by 2027, the school is bracing for more congestion. Plans are underway for 20 new classrooms, but in the interim, many students continue their education in temporary buildings.

Despite being a top priority for infrastructure upgrades, the school’s expansion has not reportedly kept pace with enrollment growth. Last year, the announcement of “temporary hire spaces” aimed to alleviate overcrowding, but the problem persists.

One parent’s dashcam footage, shared on social media, encapsulates the daily ordeal.

Blame games ensue, with the council pointing fingers at the State Government for the gridlock. The sheer magnitude of the traffic snarls, often exceeding 100 cars and stretching over 700 metres along Ritchie Rd, paints a vivid picture of the chaos.

A representative from the Department of Transport and Main Roads clarified that none of the roads adjacent to the school fell under state jurisdiction.

Similarly, a spokesperson from the Department of Education emphasised that, in this particular situation, the local council was accountable for the management of public roads.

Regarding this matter, Council Infrastructure Chair Cr Andrew Wines mentioned that they have been collaborating with the school to enhance traffic flow and promote responsible driver behaviour during school drop-off and pick-up times.

Despite previous discussions by the Council to widen Ritchie Rd into a dual carriageway and revamp parking arrangements, the road remains limited to two lanes. Furthermore, footpaths are absent along most of its stretch, and deep swales flank either side of the road.

He expressed concerns about the lack of investment from the State Government in the local road and transport network, stating that Pallara is a growing suburb, and despite the construction of a new school, he said there has been a failure to provide adequate support for families in reaching it.

Pallara State School Unveils ‘Garden of Service’ Honouring Veteran Families

The Pallara State School History Club has created a special “Garden of Service” on the school grounds to honour local families who have had members serve in major conflicts.

The garden opening ceremony on Thursday, April 18, was attended by representatives and veterans from the Forest Lake and Sunnybank RSL sub-branches.

The idea stemmed from the club’s award-winning 2023 Vietnam Research Project for the ANZAC Awards. After their successful project, the students decided to gather information from Pallara families about relatives who served in WWI, WWII, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts.

An overgrown area next to the school’s ANZAC memorial was cleared and transformed into the garden space. Funds from their ANZAC Award win allowed them to prepare the area with mulch, dig trenches for flowers, and add paving stones.

What makes the garden uniquely personal are the engraved paving stones containing the names of the served family members and their printed handprints and family names placed beside them. Club coordinator and teacher Mr Keegan Peace transcribed the family information onto the stones.

At the opening ceremony yesterday, students gave speeches and interviewed veterans to learn firsthand accounts of service. Newly sworn-in Councillor Emily Kim joined the RSL guests as the students cut the ribbon, officially opening the garden to be viewed by the school and wider community.

Pallara State School launched the history club last year for students in grades 3 and 4 who have an interest in Australian and global historical events and figures.

On a weekly basis, the club organises visits from guest speakers to educate the young members about significant subjects and themes from the past. The goal is to foster an early passion for learning about history through these interactive and engaging sessions led by outside experts and authorities on various historical topics.

The passion project allowed the students to honour local service members whilst creating a vibrant garden space on campus. The Garden of Service stands as a unique testament to the sacrifices made by Pallara’s own families.
