Hugo firefighters fill the boot

During the 2017 MDA Fill the Boot campaign, members of the Hugo Fire Department took to the streets with boots in hand to request donations to help kids and adults with muscular dystrophy, ALS, and related life-threatening diseases live longer and grow stronger. On Sept. 9, more than $3,000 was raised to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
“The firefighters in this area have once again shown tremendous dedication to the MDA mission,” MDA Area Director Hannah Plagman said in a press release. “They clearly take great pride in caring for MDA families through the ‘Fill the Boot’ campaign. This year’s ‘Fill the Boot’ was an incredible success, and we are grateful for the generosity of those in Hugo and the surrounding communities who have donated their money to help individuals with muscular dystrophy, ALS, and related muscle-debilitating diseases truly live unlimited.”broadstreet.zone(48036);

Changing the conversation

Paul Thomas
Guest Columnist
About 25 years ago, I remember a very tense conversation around the dinner table. As we gathered for our family meal with my mom, dad, little brother (7) and sister (2), there was a “feeling in the air” that even a 10-year-old boy could recognize. With a calm in her voice yet a nervousness in her words, my mother explained to us that my aunt had recently been to the doctor for some tests, and those test revealed something very troubling: that my aunt had … cancer. “Cancer!” I exclaimed in a loud and scared voice that one could tell was the exact way my mom and dad felt but weren’t able to show their true feelings so as not to upset us kids. It was almost as if the word itself was evil and that merely speaking “cancer” aloud caused the room to be filled with fear.

Understanding the long term care insurance claim process

Those who own a long term care insurance policy should know what it covers. Every policy, however, is different. Interested parties are invited to attend a presentation at Cherrywood Pointe Oct. 16 at 1:30 p.m. to hear from Greg Getchell, owner of Amada Senior Care. His presentation will cover what a long term care insurance policy covers, whether or not that policy can help pay for home care or assisted living, the coverage limits for each service, and the definitions of an inflation rider and a premium waiver. Attendees will also learn how to file a claim. There will be a tour of Cherrywood Pointe after the seminar.

Beloved educator leaves legacy of caring

Submitted photoPatricia Steichen will be remembered for her dedication to her friends, family, and the students she served.
According to those who knew her best, saying that Patricia Steichen cared more than most would be an understatement. The long-time Forest Lake educator passed away Sept. 8, but the kindness she shared throughout the community will be remembered for a very long time.
“She was a very big-hearted girl who always wanted to do things for people,” Steichen’s brother Robert said. “She was a kind person who never forgot a birthday. Her friends and her family and the kids she worked with were her life.”broadstreet.zone(48036);
Steichen attended the University of Minnesota in Duluth and came to Linwood Elementary to teach shortly thereafter. She taught there for more than 34 years. After retirement, she went to Lakes International Language Academy and worked as an administrative assistant starting at school’s inception.
