Neighborhood rallies to fight cancer through marathon

Submitted photos Residents of the Liberty Ponds neighborhood in Forest Lake have rallied behind Marc and Tana Thompson in an effort to raise funds for cancer research by running in the Grandma’s Marathon in June. Marc battled cancer in 2009 and was declared cancer-free in March 2010.
When Tana Thompson’s then-boyfriend Marc was unexpectedly diagnosed with cancer in 2009 at age 36, the two were taken by surprise and were thrown into a situation that was completely unfamiliar to them.
“Marc was very healthy and in shape and we never thought cancer would be anything we would have to deal with,” Tana said. “He found a lump on his neck while shaving and the doctor told him it was no big deal, and they did a needle biopsy and again told us it was not cancer and then they removed the lump on a Wednesday, and on Friday we got the call

Forest Lake High School receives grant for local waste reduction project

The Forest Lake Environmental Club/YES! Team recently received a $989.73 grant from the Youth Energy Summit program and The McKnight Foundation. The team will use the grant to reduce waste throughout the school and community education during Earth Week.
The waste reduction project will include purchasing recycling bins for the school’s cafeteria and gym where there are currently no recycling bins. The group will also be celebrating an Environmental Week leading up to Earth Day during lunch hours. This will include educating students about recycling and waste reduction with the use of games and other activities. Also, they hope to hand out plantable bookmarks in the spirt of Earth Day!

Gary Ray Olson

Loving Husband, Father & GrandfatherAge 64 of Hugo passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on March 3, 2017. Gary was an outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He is preceded in death by his father, Earl; mother & father-in-law, Norma and Richard Bowen; sister-in-law, Erica; brother-in-law, Steven Wallraff. Emmer town hall draws large crowd

Constituents who packed U.S. 6th District Rep. Tom Emmer’s first town hall meeting of the year remained civil yet persisent and feisty in expressing their political exasperation.
Approximately 150 people filled the Sartell City Council chambers for the Wednesday, Feb. 22, event. The Sartell Police Department estimated that approximately 400 people waited outside after the doors were closed.broadstreet.zone(48036);
The majority of those waiting in line spent the late afternoon waving signs, singing songs or shouting chants expressing their concerns about Republican plans to repeal the Affordable Care Act or expressing strong opposition to early policy decisions being made by President Donald Trump.

By the end of March, the old Forest Lake City Hall, on the north end of Lake Street, is to be taken down towards new development. Inside this old building, the Forest Lake Historical Society has been storing precious items donated over many years, for which there still no permanent home.

On Dec. 19, 2016, just after 8 p.m., Forest Lake emergency personnel received an emergency call of a fire in a home on the 21000 block of Everton Avenue North, on the south side of Clear Lake – the home of Forest Lake Councilman Ed Eigner. According to a police report and the Fire Department, Cockburn was on patrol near Menards and arrived before firefighters did.
