Pokemon run wild through Wyoming Elementary math lesson

Wyoming Elementary first- and second-graders chased Pokemon throughout the school hallways on Feb. 3, all in the name of math.
During the school’s TARGET time, a half hour of instruction time to meet the students’ academic needs at their level, students walked around the school looking for Pokemon pictures with math equations written on them that included one, two and three digit addition and subtraction. Each equation was tailored to the specific grade level and performance levels within that grade level. Students traveled the hallways with a partner in search of Pokemon that were in plain sight, on the ceiling and some more hidden. Once the student pairs solved an equation, they used an iPad to check if their answers were correct. If not, they had to go back and try to solve it again. All correct answers gave students points, which were indicated on the Pokemon paper. The goal by

Plunge moves to Plan Brrrr

broadstreet.zone(48036);
After warm temperatures decimated the lake ice in the two weeks before the Forest Lake Rotary’s annual Winter Plunge, the Rotary’s permit to hold the plunge on the ice of Forest Lake was pulled by Washington County a few days before the event. Determined to continue the event, for the first time in the plunge’s eight-year history, the event was held on land Feb. 25, with participants jumping into a large, cooled pool set up in Lakeside Memorial Park. Plunge co-organizer Blake Roberts told The Times the plunge was on track this year to exceed $1 million in donations over the entire history of the event. View more photos and a first-person video of the plunge at forestlaketimes.com.

Continuing to increase school funding at the Capitol

Bob Dettmer
Guest Columnist
When I read the article in last Thursday’s paper titled “District hopes for funding gap relief,” I was interested. This interest quickly turned to dismay as I read through the piece. I would like to address some concerns that were articulated by School Board members in the article.broadstreet.zone(48036);
As a former educator and high school wrestling coach myself, I have made a conscious effort to be in frequent contact with teachers from our area, the School Board and the Forest Lake School District’s administration regarding how we can help our district with funding shortfalls. I have held several meetings over the last three months to gather input leading up to this legislative session, which have been profitable and resulted in ideas for new legislation.
As the article’s writer states in the first sentence of the piece, the school funding formula is extremely complicated, but we are always working on how
