After warm temperatures decimated the lake ice over the last week, the Forest Lake Rotary’s permit to hold the winter plunge on Forest Lake was pulled by Washinghton County this week. However, the show will go on: for the first time in the event’s eight-year history, the event will be held on land, with participants jumping into a large, cooled pool that will be set up in Lakeside Memorial Park.
“We wanted to do what we could to give people the opportunity to still do it,” said Blake Roberts, one of the event organizers.broadstreet.zone(48036);
Roberts said that when county officials measured the ice thickness on Tuesday, the lake had lost about a foot of ice in the last week, dropping below the 18 inches required to hold the event. Gymnastics: Pleski, Dodge earn trips to state meet
Sofia Dodge goes head over heels on the balance beam during her state-qualifying performance.
When the Class AA state gymnastics championships commence this weekend, two Rangers will be in action competing against the best tumblers in Minnesota. Junior Faith Pleski qualified by placing third in the uneven bars at the Section 7AA championship on Feb. 18, and sophomore Sofia Dodge advanced on the strength of a fourth-place finish in the balance beam.
As a team, the Rangers took third of eight with 142.35 points, behind Cambridge-Isanti (143.7) and Anoka (143.4). Only the top-scoring team qualifies for the team finals at state.broadstreet.zone(48036);
“It was a really good day for us,” head coach Lindsey Pierron said. “It was a really close race between the top three teams.”
The Rangers’ score was their official season-best, behind an unofficial 144.3 achieved at an invitational at Cambridge-Isanti.
“At a meet like this, the judges are much tighter with their scoring,”
Wrestlers nearly upset No. 4 St. Francis at sectionals
113-pounder Max Amann, right, stepped up to 120 and scored a pin in the Rangers’ match against St. Francis.
After the first four bouts in Forest Lake’s Section 7AAA semifinal match against St. Francis, the fourth-ranked team in Minnesota, the Rangers led 23-0. Eighth-grader Derrick Cardinal and junior Max Amann each stepped up a class, to 113 and 120 respectively, and earned pins against larger opponents.
“That’s a season-defining win for Derrick,” head coach Joe Kunshier said. “Tanner Kunshier (Cardinal’s opponent) is a big 113-pounder and rated. Max came off a loss in the quarterfinals and stepped up. If he can find a bit more consistency, he’s going to be very tough.” broadstreet.zone(48036);
Freshman Kieler Carlson, recently crowned the ninth-grade state champion, scored a technical fall at 126 to establish the 23-point lead.
The rest of the way, though, the Rangers would only earn four points. They suffered losses in most of the higher

Rotary considers plunge plans
The Forest Lake Rotary is making plans to continue its annual Winter Plunge event at its scheduled time of noon Feb. 25 on Forest Lake near the shore of Lakeside Memorial Park, despite recent temperatures that have reached into the 60s. As of press time, according to event organizers, the plan is to move some activities that usually take place on the ice, including a changing tent and parking, to the shore. Currently, the Rotary is unsure if spectators will be allowed on the ice during the jumps; final decisions about the event will likely be made Feb. 24 in cooperation with the Washington County Water Recovery Unit, which cuts the ice hole for the Rotary. The plungers had raised roughly $50,000 with a week to go before the plunge, roughly on par with last year’s numbers.
