K-9 police dog Ranger dies

The Forest Lake Police Department’s K-9 unit, Ranger, died after assisting local law enforcement with a traffic stop on Feb. 7. The cause of death for the police dog is still under investigation.
According to reports from the Forest Lake Police Department and Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the Minnesota State Patrol attempted to conduct a stop on a vehicle for a traffic violation on a state patrol-monitored road. A state patrol car followed the vehicle onto a side road near the intersections of State Highway 97 and U.S. Highway 61, where Forest Lake police assisted on the stop around 11:30 p.m. An occupant of the car (whose name has not yet been released) was allegedly not compliant with officer instructions. Council explores contract law enforcement guidelines

A group of protestors that topped out at around 25 people stood in front of Forest Lake City Hall for about an hour Feb. 6 to protest the city’s request for a contract law enforcement proposal from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
The Forest Lake City Council scheduled a special work session Feb. 6 to discuss the guiding principles of its evaluation of moving to contract law enforcement services, as well as to discuss the airport overrun cost dispute.broadstreet.zone(48036);
As it was at the council’s Jan. 23 meeting, the council chamber was packed with residents who wanted to speak or hear about the latest developments on the law enforcement issue, which was brought to the spotlight after the city’s Personnel Committee authorized a request for a proposal for contracted services from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Educators impressed by Century students’ innovation

A group of Forest Lake middle schoolers got tho show off their problem-solving skills in an innovation competition earlier this month at the annual Minnesota School Board Convention.
The DLR group is a design company that is working on the Forest Lake Area School’s building project and also works with many school districts across the country.broadstreet.zone(48036);
Part of the DLR business model is not only to provide architecture, engineering, planning, interior design and building optimization assistance, but also to create innovation challenges for kids.

Elroy James Reidt, Jr.

Elroy Reidt, Jr., age 77 of Forest Lake, passed away at home on Feb. 3, 2017. He was born June 28, 1939.
Preceded in death by parents, Elroy Sr. and Orabelle; brother, LeRoy and infant brother, Roger; nephews, Michael and Keith.
Survived by wife, Ellen; siblings, Dean, JoAnn, Beverly; children, Perry (Gail), Rick (Karen), Julie, Jimmy (Brenda); grandchildren, Elizabeth (Nick), Emily, Shawn, Ellen, Aubrey, Austin, Matthew, Daniel; great-grandchildren, Madison and Hayden.
A private family gathering and lunch will be held Saturday, Feb. 18th at Roberts Family Life Celebration Home, 555 Centennial Dr. SW, Forest Lake. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Brighton Hospice, MN, www.brightonhospice.com.

Ronald J. Carlstrom

Ronald James Carlstrom, age 81, of Forest Lake, Minnesota, passed away peacefully at the Birchwood Health Care Center in Forest Lake.
Ronald was born October 7, 1935 to Roy and Mary Ann (Tarnowski) Carlstrom. He grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota. Ronald joined the Marine Corps in 1952, serving his country in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1955.
Ronald spent many years working for the highway department in construction and finishing his career in carpentry. He was a member of the NRA club and the Pigeon Club.
Ronald enjoyed coon hunting and deer hunting, fishing and any sort of outdoor activity. He also raised and raced pigeons.
Ronald is survived by his brother, Gordon (Neva) Carlstrom and sister, Roberta (Mike) Tauer; many nieces and nephews.
Ronald is preceded in death by his parents, Roy Carlstrom and Mary Ann Norquist.
A memorial service is planned for a later date. Arrangements are with the Grandstrand

Scandia amends event ordinance

The Jan. 17 City Council meeting in Scandia was the first led by newly elected Mayor Christine Maefsky and attended by newly elected Councilman Steve Kronmiller.
Rural event ordinance
The first item was amending the city’s development code related to rural event sites. Led by the work of the Planning Commission and Scandia City Planner Sheri Buss, changes were made to specific sections of the ordinance.
A rural event site is now called a “rural event site activity area,” which is defined as the specific area within a property that operates as a rural event facility on which any of the activities associated with the facility area are likely to occur, including parking areas.
The application for an annual operators permit for a rural event facility must be filed with the city at least 60 days prior to the expiration of the current annual operators permit.broadstreet.zone(50962);
