Columbus asks sheriff’s office about traffic safety

Columbus city leaders welcomed a return visit and chat with Anoka County Sheriff James Stuart during a council meeting Jan. 25.broadstreet.zone(48036);
Sheriff Stuart and Sheriff’s Office Cmdr. Bryon Fuerst introduced the council to two county deputies that are assigned for regular patrol in Columbus through 2017, including one returning deputy.
During the discussion, Councilman Bill Krebs voiced concerns about traffic safety in the city. He asked for increased patrol on Broadway Avenue, especially between Potomac Street and Kettle River Boulevard where the two-lane road is particularly narrow.
Krebs noted the intersection of Broadway and Potomac can feel especially dangerous when a westbound driver is idling for a left turn onto Potomac and other motorists on Broadway are “speeding by you” on the shoulder.
Mayor Dave Povolny asked for deputies’ opinions on how drivers are adjusting to the roundabout at Broadway and Kettle River Boulevard. Sheriff Stuart said one repeated issue there has

Masons fundraising applications are now being accepted

The Forest Lake Masons are now accepting applications from charitable organizations to participate in one of the three community support fundraising events planned for 2017. The Masons have had a long history of fundraising for cancer research, children’s health, support of soldiers and their families, and support of local family and youth needs. The Masons have been successful with their current model of tying these charitable fund raising events with lodge pancake breakfasts. Historically, donations have been in the $1,000 to $6,000 range. This year will have three potential events with the first in April. Applications are being accepted now. Interested organizations do not need to be in Forest Lake, but should be at least in the surrounding area. CornerFlex, Inc. to partner with Operation Honor

CornerFlex, Inc., a family-owned business in Scandia, has joined forces with two other Minnesota businesses to support Operation Honor, a well-established public charity based in Owen County, Kentucky. Operation Honor hires veterans to hand-craft burial and retirement flag cases to sell and donate to veteran cemeteries across the nation. Currently, most flag cases for sale to the consumer are made in China.
Joe Montgomery, the founder of Operation Honor, reached out to Greg Amundson, President and owner of CornerFlex this past December while he was looking for a product to hold the glass in place in the flag cases. Greg’s company produces and sells a self-adhesive flexible trim product that is the perfect solution.
