Open letter regarding contract law enforcement
Editor’s note: Below is the text of an open letter Forest Lake Councilwoman Mara Bain wrote to the Washington County Board of Commissioners. She requested that it be reprinted on The Times’ commentary page.
Mara Bain
Guest Columnistbroadstreet.zone(48036);
Dear Commissioner Miron, Commissioner Karwoski, Commissioner Kriesel, Commissioner Bigham, Commissioner Weik, and Sheriff Hutton:
On Jan. 18, a vote was taken by the two-councilmember City of Forest Lake Personnel Committee to request a proposal for contract law enforcement services from Washington County. The request for proposal was not discussed or voted on by City Council and did not receive public input.
The decisions that will be made by each of us in the months ahead have the potential to transform how law enforcement services are delivered in Forest Lake and across Washington County.
Providing contract services to a 36-square-mile community of 20,000 people in the northern-most region of Washington County will be no small feat.

CPA to transform stage into ‘Wonderland’
March Hare Hailey Strandquist, Mad Hatter Grace Owens, Door Mouse Anika Jensen, and Cheshire Cat Addy Berg strike a pose during a rehearsal Jan. 29.
To walk into a room filled with more than 70 excited children, one might expect a fair bit of chaos. Students in grades kindergarten to six began the registration process to be a part of this show in August and rehearsals began in September.broadstreet.zone(48036);
“We don’t say that we have auditions because anyone who wants to be involved is allowed to be,” Carrie Carlson, who co-directs with choreographer Kari Bullion, said. “Interested kids simply fill out a registration form with help from their parents, and as long as it is turned in on
County Board denies Muslim cemetery proposal
Photo by Derrick KnutsonSomeone near the proposed cemetery site placed this homemade sign in the ditch that conveys the opinion of the neighbors in the area.
There were back-and-forth discussions between commissioners and even a member of the public forcing down tears Dec. 21 just prior to the Chisago County Board voting 3-2 to deny a conditional use permit application that would have allowed an Islamic cemetery to be constructed in south Chisago Lake Township.
Commissioners George McMahon, Lora Walker and Rick Greene voted against the proposal, with commissioners Mike Robinson and Ben Montzka voting in favor.broadstreet.zone(48036);
Enes Gluhic, speaking after the meeting for the Islamic Community of Bosniaks in Minnesota, the group looking to have a 2-acre cemetery on a 16-acre plot of land near Lofton Avenue and 261st Street, said he was disheartened by the decision, but not surprised.
“I expected a lot of pushback, just because of the religious aspect of
