Dance team reigns as SEC queens

Photos by Brad O’NeilThe Forest Lake high kick team has impressed SEC judges throughout the season.
The Forest Lake Dance Team is on top of the Suburban East Conference once more. Competing in the SEC finals at Cretin-Derham Hall on Jan. 11, the kick and jazz teams defended their seasonlong position as conference leaders and confirmed themselves as overall conference champions.
“The girls’ biggest goal this year was to reclaim that conference title that we’ve had for so many years before,” head coach Rachel Rue said. “The girls’ hard work definitely paid off. They’re beyond excited and we’re beyond proud of them.”broadstreet.zone(48036);
The kick and jazz teams had each won two previous SEC showdowns this year, giving them the inside track to the title going into the finals. Forest Lake seeks proposal for sheriff’s office contract

On Jan. 18, the city of Forest Lake began the process of requesting a proposal from the Washington County Sheriff’s Department to contract law enforcement in Forest Lake. The request does not mean that the city has initiated steps to discontinue the services of the Forest Lake Police Department, but the stated goal on the city’s website is to evaluate whether county law enforcement service in the city is feasible and what kind of impact the change would have on the city’s budget.
According to a city press release, once a proposal is received from the sheriff’s department, the city would begin evaluating whether or not to make the change. The press release also states that the evaluation process would include opportunities for public engagement and residential feedback.broadstreet.zone(48036);
A proposal request letter sent by the city to Sheriff Bill Hutton states that city officials still hear positive feedback from residents about the

Gaughan proposes apartments, restaurant at old city hall site

After engaging in a preliminary development agreement with the city last summer, local developer Gaughan Companies presented on Jan. 17 a proposal for a five-story, 101-unit apartment complex, along with a restaurant, to be built on the current site of the old city hall on North Lake Street. Gaughan’s current proposal would take advantage of the city’s offer to sell the property for a dollar to the right developer but would also request that the city establish a tax increment financing district to help pay for the infrastructure improvements that would need to occur in the area before the apartments could be built.
The council had mixed feelings about the project when members discussed it during their Jan. 17 work session. They universally praised the building design and were excited by the prospect of getting the property back onto the tax rolls, but some of the council members were concerned about
