Wyoming finds unique land solution

Amy Doeun
Wyoming Reporter
There is a 6-acre area of Fireside Park in Wyoming that Marty Powers of Public Works described as being “really in a bad situation.” It was overgrown with noxious weeds and very rocky and rutted. This same area has been slated for a park improvement project including walking trails, according to Councilwoman Claire Luger.broadstreet.zone(48036);
How to get the land ready for its new use was a problem. Powers said the main issue is that the city did not have the equipment necessary to convert the land. The land was last farmed in 2006 before the farmer that owned it sold it to a developer. Eventually, two lots were pulled from the acreage, but in 2012, the remaining 6 acres were turned over to the city.
Powers said he didn’t know why the land was in such sorry condition.
“The area was rough and pitted,” he said, adding that the ruts could

Hope for the future

Like millions of Americans, I’m feeling considerable pain about the election. I also hope that President Donald Trump and others who’ve been elected will produce progress. Despite my deep disappointment with some results, I think that a number of terrific people were elected in Minnesota, both Republicans and DFLers, who have modeled collaboration and respect that helps improve the lives of youngsters and families. Their actions can serve as national models.
Fortunately Minnesotans re-elected many legislators who have shown a willingness and ability to work across party lines to get valuable things done. Here are a few examples:broadstreet.zone(48036);
–Republicans Rep. Jenifer Loon, of Eden Prairie, Rep. Sondra Erickson, of Princeton, Sen. Roger Chamberlain, Lino Lakes, and Rep. Bob Dettmer, Forest Lake, have been advocates of strong early childhood options as well as district and charter public school options. So have DFL Sens. Melisa Franzen, of Edina, and Ann Rest, of New Hope,

ECM Editorial: Bizarre presidential election is one for the history books

An editorial from the ECM Editorial Board:
Our recent election will undoubtedly go down as one of the most bizarre presidential contests in our nation’s history.broadstreet.zone(48036);
Election Day was a surprising climax to a contest that wound a tortuous course over the past 20 months. It was the biggest upset in a presidential contest in seven decades.
While former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had been virtually anointed by party leaders as the Democratic “Presidential nominee in waiting” long before her announcement in April of 2015, few considered Donald Trump to be a front runner among the 17 Republican presidential candidates when he became a candidate in June of 2015.
When Republicans and Democrats attended their respective precinct caucuses in Minnesota on March 1 of this year they voted for their presidential choice. Donald Trump finished a distant third behind Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz among Republicans. In what likely was a warning of

Budgets, mowing among Scandia session topics

Terry Traver
Scandia Reporterbroadstreet.zone(48036);
The Nov. 2 Scandia City Council work session consisted of discussion of operating budgets for 2017, a potential job offer to a Public Works director candidate, the city dog ordinance, its no-parking ordinance, a road right of way maintenance policy and the value to the city of the Fire Department’s scuba and dive team.
Budgets
Discussions surrounding 2017 budgets began with a presentation to the council from Fire Chief Mike Hinz concerning his department’s projected budget needs. Council Member Dan Lee questioned the expenditure of approximately $5,000 annually for a Fire Department dive team, saying, “Washington County handles the large majority of water rescue and recovery.” Hinz said that Scandia Fire has a mutual aid agreement with other jurisdictions, including Washington County. The council also started preliminary discussions on budgets for parks, public works, the equipment replacement fund, the local road improvement fund and both sewer funds.
