Freshmen legislators join GOP majority

After defeating incumbents during their primaries, two new local Republican lawmakers were tapped by voters on Election Day to join the state Legislature: incoming District 31B Rep. Cal Bahr and the soon-to-be District 32 Sen. Mark Koran.
The men toppled DFL challengers Susan Larson and Tim Nelson, respectively, and will become part of a legislature in which both bodies, not just the House of Representatives, will be controlled by Republicans.broadstreet.zone(48036);
It was a typically safe election night for Republicans in the area, with District 31 Sen. Michelle Benson, 39A Rep. Bob Dettmer and 39 Sen. Karin Housley all skating to victory over Ricky Englund, Jody Anderson and Sten Hakanson, respectively. Out of the five state races in The Times’ coverage area, all but Koran won with less than 60 percent of the vote.
At the federal level, incumbent 6th District Congressman Tom Emmer also easily topped challenger David Snyder, and in the one

Voters select three incumbents to School Board

When the final votes were tallied, Forest Lake area residents learned that Gail Theisen, Julie Corcoran and Rob Rapheal had retained their School Board seats quite handily. They also discovered that newcomer Jeff Peterson would soon occupy the seat left vacant when Dan Kieger, 2015-16 school board vice president, decided not to run again.
Peterson and the three returning members all spoke humbly about being honored to have earned the voters’ trust. Five-year board veteran Gail Theisen was the top vote-getter with 10,538.broadstreet.zone(48036);
“I am overwhelmed by so much support and the large number of votes,” she said. “Moving forward I look to continue to build on our successes and I want to continue to listen to parents and other district stakeholders. I am also excited to see the completion of our construction project and what that will do to improve the academics for all our students.”

Area races result in shake-ups

In every contested city or township election covered by The Forest Lake Times, one incumbent was defeated as voters selected new leadership. While Forest Lake candidates had their own perspectives on how the race shaped up (read more in the front page story, “Split ticket in Forest Lake”), the new, re-elected and defeated council and board members in Linwood, Scandia and Wyoming had their own perspectives on why voters chose who they did – and what their municipalities should look like moving forward.
Scandiabroadstreet.zone(48036);
Following the trend of many local races, the Scandia mayoral race was a squeaker, with Planning Commission Chairwoman Christine Maefsky ousting three-term Mayor Randall Simonson by a vote of 1,261 to 1,157 – a margin of only 104 votes. Maefsky credited her aggressive ground game and door knocking as part of her success, as well as a message of what Scandia’s future could be that she thinks appealed

I frequent the new YMCA in Forest Lake and think about all of the initial opposition within the community. I can hardly find a place to park at the YMCA as it is packed in the evenings with children, families, and community meetings. It is a joy to see the community coming together.
