NLA promotes emotional intelligence
Four years ago, educators at North Lakes Academy got together and engaged in conversation regarding what they could do to further ensure that graduates were as well-rounded as possible. The idea that was born out of those meetings spawned a new school curriculum called “Becoming.”
“This curriculum is totally organic and built from the ground up,” North Lakes Academy Executive Director Cam Stottler said.broadstreet.zone(48036);
“The focus is on emotional intelligence and speaks not only to how our students learn, but also how they cope with hard situations and how they get through tough times. This program has had a tremendous effect on our culture.”
The Becoming curriculum strategy is focused on helping students find a path and purpose, as well as prepare them for college and career in the 21st Century. Each grade level engages in specific courses meant to increase self-awareness, promote community, expand worldview, and stimulate leadership skills.

Creating strong relationships with teachers
Nothing is more important to parents than to have a good relationship with the teachers of their children at the start of another school year.
Teachers also realize that involving parents in teaching children has a big payoff. They are encouraged to meet parents early and to contact one another the minute they see the need.broadstreet.zone(48036);
In fact, most elementary schools have systems where teachers can inform parents daily when something has come up, rather than waiting until the parent-teacher conference when it may be too little, too late.
Teachers understand research done by the National School Public Relations Association shows parents want to know what their child is learning and how well they are learning it.
School principals insist on “parent nights,” and are sending home newsletters because research shows communications from the school itself is a parent’s most trusted source. Principals also encourage parents to volunteer at the schools and even have

Huskies win for the first time ever
The North Lakes boys soccer team began its eighth season with a 6-0 victory over the Charter Stars on Aug. 24.broadstreet.zone(48036);
Though a win of that magnitude would always be noteworthy in soccer, this particular blowout marked the first-ever victory for the Huskies after seven winless seasons.
“I definitely wasn’t expecting a blowout for our first win,” head coach Josh Ogaard said.
Senior forward Luca Hale, junior defender Hunter Brandel and sophomore defender Asher Leubke had the honor of captaining the team to its historic win, and will continue to be key players as the Huskies look for more victories.
“[Leubke] has been a huge factor in how this team has turned around,” Ogaard said. “[Hale] has been around the program pretty much since it started. He’s a good leader; definitely keeps the guys focused.”
Sophomore Alex Ten Napel will start in goal, despite never having played soccer

Huskies join forces with LILA
In 2017, the Huskies will be part-Dragon. The North Lakes Academy girls soccer team has agreed to team up with the Lakes International Language Academy for at least the next two seasons.broadstreet.zone(48036);
The Minnesota State High School League allows smaller schools to band together to form combined teams known as co-ops. The alliance between North Lakes and LILA is, at least for now, limited to the girls soccer program.
“In preseason, our numbers were a little bit lower than what we had hoped for,” head coach Ryan Colbert said. “We have a really young team so I didn’t want the younger players to be playing a lot of minutes starting out, so we decided it would make sense to combine with LILA.”
As of press time, three LILA players had joined the North Lakes team, with the possibility remaining open for others to join later. The co-op allows

Many veterans return for tennis

The Rangers were set to meet sectional foes Elk River and Princeton in a triangular meet on Aug. 29 after press time, with the slate of Suburban East Conference matches to begin with a trip to Mounds View on Aug. 31.
“I have a lot of players who are pretty equal this year,” head coach Violet Shortly said.
The varsity roster lists 24 players competing for 10 openings in a standard varsity match.
To begin the season, most of the returning veterans were in the doubles ladder. Four seniors play in the top two pairs, with Annika Lamppa and Avery Jorgenson opening at

Huskies to test TCAC’s upper division
broadstreet.zone(48036);
With five seniors and two juniors, the North Lakes volleyball team will have plenty of seasoned players to lean on in 2017. That upperclass talent will guide the Huskies on their journey through the upper division of Twin Cities Athletic Conference volleyball.
“We bring back a ton of experience,” head coach Jeff Beimert said. “We’re way more athletic than we’ve ever been.”
Two of the seniors play up front, middle hitter Maggie Thiele and right-side hitter Emma Tiedeman.
“[Thiele] will be a pretty big presence for us, she’s hitting really well so far,” Beimert said.”
Among the defensive-minded seniors, libero Annalie Peterson and defensive specialist Marie Russ are among the TCAC’s top players at their respective positions. broadstreet.zone(50962);
“[Peterson and Russ] will anchor our back line,” Beimert said.
Thiele and Russ have been named as captains.
“I want to see a lot of growth and improvement,” Thiele said. “I want us

The girls bring back six of the seven runners who ran at state, positioning themselves as a favorite to make a return trip.
“I know that all the other teams are thinking that we’re the favorites, but we’ll see,” girls head coach John Fick said.
