Gustafson elected to Gustavus hall of fame

The Gustavus Adolphus College athletic department has named 1997 Forest Lake graduate Chad Gustafson among its list of new inductees to the school’s athletic hall of fame.
After starring for the Ranger golf team in the mid-1990s, Gustafson thrived on the links for the Gusties, contributing to two Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team championships.broadstreet.zone(48036);
As a sophomore, Gustafson earned his first all-conference citation and improved to All-American the next two years, finishing 12th at the NCAA Division III championship in 2000 and 10th in 2001. He was further honored as a Golf Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete as a senior.
Gustafson and eight other inductees will be honored at a banquet held in Alumni Hall on Sept. 23 following the homecoming football game against Hamline.

Get ready for fun at the fair

Washington County Fair manager Dorie Ostertag makes it her goal to ensure there’s something for everyone to enjoy at the fair each year.
The 146th annual Washington County Fair runs Aug. 2-6 at the County Fairgrounds in Baytown Township.
A new feature returning to the grandstand for a second year is an auto cross show featuring automobiles that do trick jumps.
“Last year was the first year of auto cross, and I thought, ‘I want to see that,’” Ostertag said. “It was so fun to watch.”
Another feature added last year is being carried over this year — a mechanical bull in Building D. Ostertag said the fair is also expanding the games in Building D.broadstreet.zone(50962);

Gary D. Flint

Gary D. Flint, age 77, of Wyoming, died unexpectedly on July 31, 2017.
Gary was a 35 year employee of American National Can.
Preceded in death by parents, Lloyd and Thelma.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Sue; children, Debra (Robert) Reitzel, Daniel (Vicki), Dawn (Tim) Matuseski, Mike (Pat Trombley), Kelly Rydeen (Blaine Dorweiler); 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; siblings, Sandy (Ken) Keister, Lloyd (Nancy), J. Lindsay (Terry Kjellgren), Colleen (Kevin) Smith; many relatives and friends.
A Celebration of Gary’s Life will be 4-8 p.m., Thursday, August 3, 2017, with 7:30 p.m. sharing, at Mattson Funeral Home, 343 North Shore Drive, Forest Lake. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or Alzheimer’s Association.

Audience protests Columbus asphalt plant

Residents of Columbus and the surrounding area voiced their concerns about a proposed asphalt plant in the city during a July 26 City Council meeting.broadstreet.zone(48036);
Kent Peterson, CEO of Bituminous Roadways Inc., has signed a purchase agreement for the property at 13345 and 13363 W. Freeway Drive in Columbus. This “Triangle” property is located just south of the Interstate Highway 35 split near Running Aces Casino and Racetrack. Peterson would like to build a Bituminous Roadways state-of-the-art facility on the property to produce asphalt for paving projects within a 15-mile radius of the plant.
At the July 26 meeting, Kenneth Rohlf, an attorney representing Peterson, asked the Columbus City Council to table the pending preliminary plat application until some of the text regarding the asphalt plant, the outdoor storage, and the sewer hookup could be amended. The council agreed to the request.

Fairview Health Services offers free local sports physicals

This summer, Fairview Sports and Orthopedic Care and Fairview Clinics are offering free local sports physicals to student athletes to make sure they can safely participate in physical activity. The Minnesota State High School League requires a qualifying or pre-participation exam for each student prior to playing a high school sport. Student athletes must complete a PPE once every three years of participation, according to MSHSL guidelines.
Sports physicals screen for life-threatening conditions or conditions that may cause student athletes to experience injury or illness down the road. The exam involves an extensive health questionnaire, a vision test and basic health information such as blood pressure, height, and weight. All of Fairview’s sports physicals are designed to meet Minnesota State High School League qualifications.broadstreet.zone(48036);

River Valley Riders seek volunteers

The River Valley Riders are looking for volunteers to work with instructors providing assistance during therapeutic horseback riding lessons. Evening volunteer opportunities are available from May through October in either Afton or Scandia.
