Scandia discusses retirement benefits

Terry Traver
Scandia Reporter
The Scandia City Council had another busy agenda as it worked through a number of issues at the June 20 City Council Meeting.broadstreet.zone(48036);
Firefighter retirement benefit
Currently, the benefit provided to Scandia firefighters at retirement is a lump sum payout of $2,500 per each year of service. The council looked at a request by Fire Chief Mike Hinz to increase the benefit amount from $2,500 to $2,800 per year of service beginning Jan. 1, 2018.
Currently, the Public Employees Retirement Account for Scandia firefighters has a balance of $723,514 with a projected payout of $560,011, leaving a balance of $163,503. The city’s contribution at the current benefit level is $54,742 annually. A change to a benefit of $2,800 per year of service would increase the projected liability for future payouts by $66,158 and reduce the excess balance to $97,345. The annual contribution would increase by the amount of $6,471 per year

Habitat for Humanity bikers plan FL stop

For a quarter of a century, the Habitat for Humanity of Minnesota’s Habitat 500 Bike Ride has sent cyclists across Minnesota, biking 500 miles to raise funds and awareness to help Habitat for Humanity build strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the ride, which runs from July 9th through July 15th. Cyclists will begin in Victoria with overnight stops in Hutchinson, Sauk Rapids, Forest Lake, and Cannon Falls before returning to Victoria.
Since Habitat Minnesota took over coordination of the ride in 2002, the Habitat 500 Bike Ride has raised $4.6 million to support Habitat for Humanity home construction. The ride has contributed to Minnesota’s local Habitat for Humanity offices building 2,500 homes with families across the state. Every rider, every donation, and every home is a bold action taken towards a world where everyone has a decent and affordable place to live. Habitat

FFA beautifies Birchwood

The Birchwood Senior Living community, residents, families, and staff, welcomed a donation of flowers and landscaping from the FFA and the Forest Lake High School agriculture department.
“Our residents are beaming with excitement,” marketing director Shawna Kremer said in a press release.
“They are overjoyed with the gorgeous array of colors that now decorate their community courtyard. The generosity of these organization have helped to create a lovely outdoor space for our residents and families to reconnect with one another, or simply take in quiet moment alone.”
Kremer said that this kindness has also positively impacted those living in the long term care center who are unable to get outdoors independently.broadstreet.zone(48036);
“In our dining area, we are fortunate enough to have a large glass patios door that looks out onto the resident courtyard, she said. “Because of their thoughtfulness, our courtyard is now flooded with an abundance of color and life. What a joy

Brewers, St. Croix split 1860-rules games

The Forest Lake Brewers took a break from their baseball schedule to play a pair of “base ball” games using rules circa 1860 against the St. Croix Base Ball Club on June 1 at Schumacher Field.broadstreet.zone(48036);
“We did this for the first time last year and we had a blast,” Brewers coach Adam Gallatin said. “It’s definitely different.”
The Brewers took the first game of the doubleheader 9-4, while the re-enactors claimed the second game 9-8.
In 1860, fielders did not wear gloves. Players were spared the need to risk their hands by a rule allowing a fielder to put the batter out by catching the ball after one bounce, though infield throws were still winged as hard as they are today, making the old-time game particularly harsh on first basemen.
“It’s very interesting with no gloves,” Gallatin said.
To begin a play, the “hurler” pitched the ball

Bond eyed to bring athletic facilities up to par

Photos by Brad O’NeilIn contrast to the high-quality south courts, the north tennis courts at the Forest Lake Area High School are in a state of extreme disrepair.
As the calendar turns to July, Forest Lake athletes will be working hard on their offseason training, even as they find time to enjoy their summer vacations. Some will be entertaining dreams of making a varsity squad for the first time. Others will be confident in making a return to that level for the second, third or fourth year in a row.
When they return to school and begin their seasons in earnest, however, some of them already know they will not be playing in a varsity-level facility.broadstreet.zone(48036);
“We have nine varsity teams whose home facilities are inadequate,” Forest Lake activities director Aaron Forsythe said.
The high school’s main athletic field supports the football, soccer and lacrosse programs.
While the athletes train, the Forest Lake Area School
