Forest Lake Area Schools, in partnership with the Lakes Center for Youth & Families, received a $48,636 grant on April 13 to support a project related to school-based mental health. The purpose of the grant is to reach out to students in grades 9 to 12 at Forest Lake Area High School and the Alternative Learning Center who may need counseling and assistance on issues related to mental health, and possibly advice on what a healthy lifestyle and mindset looks like.
The project is expected to help serve 50 to 80 students whose families are either uninsured or underinsured and are not able to pay the copay for mental health services that they need.
Goals of the program include bridging a partnership in order to remove barriers by offering mental health counseling and support on site at FLAHS and the ALC; training district staff, administrators, and others about mental health issues affecting

DI team earns 4th place at state
Scandia Elementary’s Destination Imagination team, Techno Perfecto, took fourth place out of 11 teams at this year’s Destination Imagination Minnesota Affiliate State Tournament April 22 at Jackson Middle School in Champlin. During the Regional Tournament Central Challenge that got it to state, Techno Perfecto had to build a stage and transfer a team member across it, design an opening act and a headlining act, and incorporate technical effects while staying within a $200 budget. This all had to be completed within an eight minute time period. The team designed a scissor lift with a hydraulic jack to lift a team member 15 inches off the ground.
Techno Perfecto added a few improvements to its challenge from the regional tournament, but the majority of its solution stayed the same. The top three teams move on to Global Finals in Knoxville, Tenn. Techno Perfecto was considered a Global Finals alternate but did not

Bonita “Bonnie” L. Parenteau (Picotte), age 68, of Columbus, passed away on June 24, 2017.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James; son, Joe; and grandson, Cody.
Bonnie is survived by her son, Andy; granddaughter, Breanna Miller; brother, Brad; sister, Sue Picotte-Clark; numerous nieces and nephews; and beloved dog, Kitty.

Environmental awareness
Forest Lake resident and avid fisherman Nick Kelley is trying to raise awareness about litter in local lakes and parks. He visits Shields Lake Park frequently to fish and is disheartened by the garbage on the ground he sees when he visits. He hopes to encourage local users of the outdoors to pick up after themselves to keep the lakes and parks clean, and he hopes to get a trash can installed at Shields Lake Park.
Students recognized for promoting positive classroom culture
Forest Lake Area High School’s student council recognized students for their hard work and dedication to promoting positive environments in their classes during third quarter.
In the student council’s quest for recognizing those students who have showcased the positive things going on in the department and have helped create a culture where being kind and doing well in the classroom is a great thing, the academic department teachers chose one sophomore, junior, and senior who have demonstrated these concepts to receive a certificate and recognition.
Each teacher wrote a letter with a reason as to why that student should be selected and then mailed that letter to the student who would receive the recognition. Reasons for choosing a particular student included “this student was phenomenal with their writing skills and thinking outside the box,” to “this student was extremely helpful this quarter with a student who did not understand the material.”broadstreet.zone(48036);

Lindie Lou (Mellema) Martin, age 64 of Scandia, MN, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2017.
Lindie Lou (Mellema) Martin was born on September 23, 1952 in Aitkin, MN at Draper Maternity. She was the daughter of Otto and Anna Barbara (Weistroffer) Mellema. She went through the 10th grade at Aitkin High School in Aitkin, MN. Lindie was united in marriage to Thomas Glenn Martin on December 20, 1969 at Monticello Alliance Church in Monticello, MN. They were married 24 years and 11 months when her husband Thomas passed away on November 25, 1994. She was a machine operator for 20 years at Graco Inc. in Northeast Minneapolis, MN. She liked working on genealogy, finding her past and present relatives. She enjoyed traveling to meet the relatives that she found in her searches. Lindie had four children, Angela Rae Mellema, Twyla Dee Martin, Tanya Rose Martin and Thomas Glenn Martin Jr.
