The Forest Lake baseball team beat Maple Grove 6-5 in eight innings in the Class AAAA quarterfinals at CHS Field in St. Paul June 15.broadstreet.zone(48036);
“This game was awful exciting for both teams,” Forest Lake head coach Tal Gravelle said. “It was a fun game, (Maple Grove) is a really tough opponent.”
The Rangers, ranked No. 2 in the state tournament, were already the top team remaining when they took the field: No. 1 Wayzata lost to unseeded Eden Prairie 6-1 earlier in the day.
The Rangers sent Cameron Kline to the mound, following up on his two-hit shutout in the Section 7AAAA championship game.

Foster, Parent bring home state medals

Forest Lake juniors Chloe Foster and Jenna Parent both finished fourth in their respective events at the Class AA state track and field championships at Hamline University June 9-10.broadstreet.zone(48036);
Foster established a new Forest Lake record in the preliminary round of the 300 hurdles, lowering her own school mark to 44.87. That result placed her second in her heat and earned automatic advancement to the final.
In the championship race, Foster finished fourth (44.98) to earn an all-state medal and a place on the podium.
Parent earned the same set of honors in the pole vault after clearing 11 feet. Parent established a new Ranger record earlier this year when she cleared 11 feet, 4 inches.

Walton is first-team All-American

Forest Lake graduate and University of Nebraska junior Cody Walton placed seventh at the NCAA Division I track and field championships over the weekend to win first-team All-American honors. Walton earned a total of 7,813 points across 10 events: 100 (11.14), long jump (23 feet, 8.75 inches), shot put (45 feet, 9.75 inches), high jump (6 feet, 6 inches), 400 (50.27), 110 hurdles (14.66), discus throw (139 feet), pole vault (15 feet, 5.5 inches), javelin throw (207 feet, 6 inches) and 1500 (4:55.09). The result is Walton’s second-best score, after a 7,937-point performance earlier this year, which set an all-time Husker record.

One year in, YMCA feels community support

Photos by Ryan HowardAmong the pleasant surprises experienced by the Forest Lake YMCA in its first year of existence is the number of teens who use the facility’s exercise and weight-lifting equipment, an anomaly for Ys in the Twin Cities metro area.
As the Forest Lake YMCA approaches its one-year anniversary in the city, the organization’s local team is reflecting on how the facility has exceeded expectations while looking ahead at future goals.
“It’s been a really good first year,” said Sharna Braucks, the executive director of the Ys in both Forest Lake and Lino Lakes. “I think it really shows the community need that was there.”broadstreet.zone(48036);
