A fixture in the lives of previous generations of Forest Lake children has moved on, as longtime Forest Lake Area Schools bus driver Floyd Holzschuh died April 7, two days before his 91st birthday.
In his later years, Floyd and his wife, Carol, lived in North Branch, but Floyd was a community pillar for decades, entering the city’s restaurant business in 1969 before eventually becoming a bus driver, a job he held for almost 30 years.broadstreet.zone(48036);
“(He was) very dedicated,” said Bruce Holzschuh, one of Floyd’s four children. “Whether it was family or work ethic – doing a good job, doing the right thing – he was a straight arrow. In a lot of ways, he was really a simple person, kind of a quiet leader, leading by example.”

Jeff had been active at a gym near their home in south Minneapolis. Rhea was unhappy with her weight and a limited level of fitness, but she says she wasn’t motivated to join any program until a co-worker spoke about a Farrell’s location in New Hope near
Family Pathways receives donation from Century student council
Led by Century Junior High English teachers and Student Council advisors Suzanne McDowell and Keith Schwartz, the Century Junior High Student Council decided in December that they wanted to raise and collect food for the community during the holidays. So on Dec. 22, student council members loaded vehicles with more than 1,800 food items and $1,209 and delivered them to the Forest Lake Family Pathways Thrift Store. The council fundraises each year and picks a different place to raise funds and food for. This year, the council enjoyed watching how the entire operation is run with Family Pathways and wanted to give back to the organization, so they hosted their drive from Dec. 12 to 22 for Family Pathways. Schwartz said it was a very successful food-drive and fundraiser, and the student council is looking forward to providing this service every year.

Landing, bicycles among Scandia council topics

As the public forum to discuss the Log House Landing ramp drew near, the dispute over the city’s approach to the project continued at the Scandia City Council work session on April 5. Mayor Christine Maefsky and Councilmen Steve Kronmiller and Robert Hegland weren’t in support of funding a rebuild of the Log House Landing ramp area, while Councilmen Chris Ness and Jim Schneider defended the previous council decision to rebuild and remodel the ramp to include being used for boats and trailers.broadstreet.zone(48036);
“I don’t have an issue with leaving the ramp alone,” Ness said. But it will come back again and again until it is closed.”
An open forum to give the public an opportunity to express their support for one of four options for the site is set for April 25.
The options are to leave the ramp as it is with no changes, move ahead with the plan
