After Log House article, Scandia considers communications

Terry Traver
Scandia Reporter
What began as a typical council meeting on March 21 evolved into a contentious discussion about an article regarding the Log House Landing project submitted by Mayor Christine Maefsky and Councilman Steve Kronmiller for the spring Scandia newsletter.broadstreet.zone(48036);
Councilman Jim Schneider was irritated that the article was not approved by the full council before being sent to city staff to be placed into the newsletter because he felt that the content was biased; ultimately, the article was not placed in the newsletter.
“It’s a perfect example of someone trying to verse their personal views in the newsletter, which I am dead set against,” Schneider said. “The facts are again being skewed. It was voted on and it’s a done deal.” City
Schneider was referring to the agreement previously voted on and approved by the council to remodel the Log House Landing boat ramp with financial assistance from the Carnelian-Marine-St. Croix Watershed

The Forest Lake High School band and orchestra programs received superior ratings at the Minnesota State High School League Region VII Instrumental Large Group Contest on Feb. 14 at St. Francis High School.
The orchestra performed the first movement from the Tchaikovsky “String Serenade” and Shostakovitch’s “Waltz No. 2” while the Symphonic Winds performed “Tempered Steel” by Charles Rochester Young and “Irish Tune from County Derry” by Percy Grainger.broadstreet.zone(48036);
Three judges listened to and critiqued each group. The judges conversed about what rating they felt each group deserved: fair, good, excellent, and superior. After their discussion, the judges would calculate the average of the total ratings and present it.
“This year is the first, in as long as I can remember, that the orchestra scored a unanimous superior rating,” Orchestra director David Livermore said in a press release.
Also competing in the contest were St. Francis, Andover, Chisago Lakes, North Branch and Princeton. Only

Editorial: Obstructing legislator pay raise subverts will of voters

Minnesotans who voted in November to empower an independent commission to set state legislators’ salaries may have been surprised to learn that the raw politics they’d hoped to transcend never went away.
Last month, when the newly appointed Legislative Salary Council approved a 45 percent salary increase for the state’s 201 legislators, the leader of the Minnesota House pounced.broadstreet.zone(48036);
In a March 16 letter, Speaker Kurt Daudt, R-Crown, instructed the House controller not to fund the pay increases, scheduled by law to take effect July 1.
Depending on his appetite for brinkmanship over the issue, Daudt risks plunging Minnesota into a state constitutional crisis. He has already, in our opinion, subverted the will of the voters.
In a landslide, 76 percent of them voted in November for a constitutional amendment creating the Legislative Salary Council, whose statutory duty is to “prescribe” legislative salaries by March 31 of odd-numbered years. The amendment struck from the
