FL to Guam transplants hope war talk blows over

Submitted photosTomas Paulino, a former school principal in Forest Lake, is now retired and living on Guam along with three of his six children and nine grandchildren.
Tomas Paulino has experienced war and never hopes to do it again.
That’s understandable for a native of Guam who lived through the Japanese occupation in the 1940s and now shudders to think of what may happen if North Korea carries through on threats to fire nuclear-tipped missiles at the island in the western Pacific Ocean.broadstreet.zone(48036);
A former junior high school principal in the Forest Lake School District, Paulino moved to Guam following his retirement in 1993, and three of six children have done likewise. Nine of Paulino’s 16 grandchildren also live on Guam.
Guam has come under the international spotlight in the rising tensions between the United States and North Korea as the latter nation continues to flaunt its growing military strength and long-range missile capabilities.

Running Aces halts $9 million hotel development

Running Aces Casino & Racetrack has halted plans to construct a $9 million hotel (forestlaketimes.com/2016/10/19/running-aces-to-add-grand-stay-hotel-and-suites) next to their current facilities over the potential construction of a Bituminous Roadways asphalt plant. The hotel was expected to bring more than 50 jobs to Columbus and the surrounding communities.broadstreet.zone(48036);
According to a press release issued on behalf of Running Aces Aug. 16, the asphalt plant would bring more than 500 open bed asphalt trucks past the site of the proposed hotel and existing casino/racetrack everyday, posing a significant threat to the success of the project. Mayor Dave Povolny and the Columbus city council will have the final say on whether or not the asphalt plant is approved.
Critics point out that the asphalt plant breaks with the Columbus 2030 Comprehensive Plan, endangering millions of dollars in future economic development and hundreds of jobs for the city. The Comprehensive Plan designates the land along the I-35

Stomp Out Suicide musician connects with the cause

Submitted photoSinger/songwriter Jake Nelson will be the featured performer at the 2017 Stomp Out Suicide event. His song, “You’re Not Alone” is about struggling with depression and mental illness.

“I wrote a song called ‘You’re Not Alone’ that was inspired by a veteran buddy of mine who served in Iraq and Afghanistan,” White Bear Lake singer-songwriter Jake Nelson said. “He was dealing with some serious post-traumatic stress disorder, and he tried to take his life. Luckily he is still with us today, but his struggles are what really prompted me to write the song.”broadstreet.zone(48036);

Council digs into 2018 budget, levy

The Forest Lake City Council looked at proposed 2018 budget numbers and offered feedback on individual pieces and priorities during a workshop on Aug. 8. The meeting was the first of multiple meetings the council will have this month before setting a preliminary budget and levy, a number that cannot be increased for the rest of the budget process, in September.
The basicsbroadstreet.zone(48036);
The initial proposal for the 2018 levy, prepared with input from city staff and the city’s Finance Committee, calls for an overall levy increase from the approximately $9.48 million of this year’s levy to $9.94 million in 2018, an increase of about 4.88 percent or $460,000. However, even though the levy itself is going up, two important levy numbers are set to decrease under the proposed levy.
The first number set to decrease is the total general fund levy, which is going down because the city is moving its capital
