FLHS band, orchestra programs receive top rating at contest

The Forest Lake High School band and orchestra programs received superior ratings at the Minnesota State High School League Region VII Instrumental Large Group Contest on Feb. 14 at St. Francis High School.
The orchestra performed the first movement from the Tchaikovsky “String Serenade” and Shostakovitch’s “Waltz No. 2” while the Symphonic Winds performed “Tempered Steel” by Charles Rochester Young and “Irish Tune from County Derry” by Percy Grainger.broadstreet.zone(48036);
Three judges listened to and critiqued each group. The judges conversed about what rating they felt each group deserved: fair, good, excellent, and superior. After their discussion, the judges would calculate the average of the total ratings and present it.
“This year is the first, in as long as I can remember, that the orchestra scored a unanimous superior rating,” Orchestra director David Livermore said in a press release.
Also competing in the contest were St. Francis, Andover, Chisago Lakes, North Branch and Princeton. Only
