Danielzuk wins TCAC hurdles
North Lakes Academy sophomore Katie Danielzuk won the 300 hurdles in the inaugural running of the Twin Cities Athletic Conference track and field championships at the International School of Minnesota on May 16. Her winning time of 52.26 outpaced the field by more than two seconds. Danielzuk also finished second in the 100 hurdles (19.18) and helped the 4×100 team finish second (56.42). The Huskies finished fourth in the 4×400 (5:32.58), 200 (Kaylynn Kuehn, 29.12) and the discus throw (Anna Povolny, 64 feet, 6 inches). The girls team finished fourth of 11 with 81 points. 21 routines qualify for state
The Forest Lake synchronized swimming team finished second at the East Section Championships at Richfield on May 19-20. The Rangers racked up 186 points, just shy of Stillwater (190) and well ahead of Richfield (25), Itasca (16) and Columbia Heights (11).broadstreet.zone(48036);
The Rangers’ “Kung Fu” routine, performed by Brecken Carr, Kenzie Klein, Fallon Olson, Megan Palmer, Michelle Perkins, Mika Peterson, Paige Thurnbeck and Lacey Wedell, took first place in the premiere event, the extended team routine competition. “Kung Fu” scored 66.226 points to edge a group from Stillwater.
A second extended routine performed by Lydia Bergeron, Bridget Beynon, Meghan Inhfe, LaCresia Meyer, Emily Ostercamp, Amanda Pothen, Dani Sardeson and Moriah Ulbricht took third.
The top four routines in each category advance to the state meet.

Carter Stumne earned a bye into the second round of the Section 7AA tennis tournament.
The spring sports season is entering its postseason phase, and Forest Lake athletes with state-qualifying dreams are now eying the postseason competitions that stand in their way.
The boys tennis team lost its opening round match in the Section 7AA team tournament 4-3 to Chisago Lakes. The Rangers were scheduled to play the opening rounds of the individual tournament over the weekend, but heavy rain pushed the matches to May 22. In singles, junior Max Kelly was set to meet Alex Sweeney of Saint Francis in the first round. Senior Carter Stumne had earned the No. 4 seed in the tournament and a bye into the second round. Doubles teams of junior Logan Olson and freshman Gunnar Green, as well as sophomore Joe Nolan and freshman Harry Wohlberg were also entered in the tournament.broadstreet.zone(48036);

Forest Lake native Ben Valine was recently granted the opportunity of a lifetime when he was selected to play with bluegrass legends Ricky Skaggs and Vince Gill in Nashville.
The April 25 performance was part of the grand opening of the Gallery of Iconic Guitars museum on the campus of Belmont University. The museum features a selection of instruments worth more than $10 million in total.broadstreet.zone(48036);
“I have been listening to Ricky and Vince pretty much my whole life,” Valine said. “Never did I dream that I would get to even meet them much less play with them.”

Well, folks, it’s been a tiresome four months, to say the least. Lots of highs and lows, and plenty of sleepless nights for 23 families. The lowest of the lows came May 8, with the vote to contract with Washington County for police services. Tuesday morning, May 9, saw several of us headed to Stillwater to speak to Washington County commissioners to plead our case. I couldn’t tell if we did any good, but at least we tried.broadstreet.zone(48036);
On Tuesday afternoon, the high school students staged a walk-out and rally at City Hall. On Wednesday, May 10, we found out Sheriff Dan Starry had pulled the proposal and provided the highest of the highs. What a ride we all had that week.
