Franken seeks U.S. Service Academy applicants
U.S. Sen. Al Franken’s office is now accepting applications from young Minnesotans interested in attending one of the nation’s four service academies, including the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Boating permit required on Forest Lake
Due to the Aquatic Invasive Species in Forest Lake, the Minnesota DNR requires all watercraft owners removing or launching their boats from or into Forest Lake to carry a permit from the DNR (found at files.dnr.state.mn.us/natural_resources/invasives/ais-auth-form-boats.pdf) with them to the next location for cleaning, repairing, storing and/or launching their watercraft.
The DNR states that individual water craft owners may not transport watercraft without removing the drain plug; arrive at a lake access with a drain plug in place; transport aquatic plants, zebra mussels, or other prohibited species without permit 2015-003; launch a watercraft with prohibited species attached; release bait into the water; or place a boat lift, dock, swim raft, or associated equipment that has been removed from any water body into another water body until a minimum of 21 days have passed.broadstreet.zone(48036);

FL man charged with burglary in Grandy
A Forest Lake man has been charged in connection with an alleged burglary at the Brass Rail in Grandy on Sept. 20.
Brandon Keith Petrashek, 40, was charged on Sept. 26 before Judge John Klossner in Isanti County District Court in Cambridge with felony first-degree burglary with possession of dangerous weapon, felony first-degree damage to property, and felony theft. Bail was set at $50,000 without conditions or $25,000 with conditions, and his next court appearance is set for Oct. 18.broadstreet.zone(48036);
The alleged burglary involved Petrashek smashing the front door of the Brass Rail and stealing an ATM machine. According to the criminal complaint, Petrashek was allegedly involved in another burglary at a car wash in Milaca. Petrashek was apprehended on Sept. 20 after being located in Lino Lakes.

Forest Lake students earn National Merit honors
Forest Lake Area High School seniors Noelle Gorka, Gabriel Robertson and Katherine Taylor have been named Commended Students in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program.
These seniors are among 34,000 students across the nation that have been recognized for their academic promise; however, they will not be continuing in the 2018 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards.
Of the 1.6 million students who entered the 2018 competition by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, the commended students placed among the top 50,000 scorers. Each student will receive a Letter of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
