From Columbus to Carlile
Submitted photo
Longtime Columbus resident Karen Hazlett is doing well in an online competition that could net her time on stage singing with singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile. Carlile is currently holding a contest in which people can vote on a number of recordings of Carlile covers, with the top vote-getter earning some stage time with the artist. At press time, Hazlett’s cover of “My Song” was in the top 10, despite most of the other top competitors having some measure of professional following. Using Carlile’s songs, Hazlett taught herself to play guitar five years ago to deal with the stress of raising her five kids, one of whom has a brain tumor and another of whom is autistic. Votes for Hazlett can be cast at www.karen2017.com.

The Castlewood Women’s Golf League invites women golfers of all abilities, including women new to the game, to join its spring and summer league. Golfers are welcome to form their own team, or league organizers will help individuals or groups find a place on an established team. League play starts with a practice night on April 13 and an official start on April 20 and then runs every week through early September. The cost is $70 league fee per player plus $1,071.25 per team for greens fees, which is divided between the number of players on a team, typically 4-6 players. The individual league fee includes handicapping fees with the Minnesota Golf Association, weekly event prizes and championship prizes.

Contract policing proposal arrives
Photo by Ryan HowardOnce again, residents crowded the council chamber and hallway of the Forest Lake City Center April 10 to listen to speakers and protest on the topic of contracting with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office for police service in Forest Lake.
The contract law enforcement proposal requested by the Forest Lake Personnel Committee from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office in January was sent to the city April 4. The Forest Lake City Council discussed the proposal timeline at its April 10 meeting and set a date for a public open house on the topic for April 18 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Forest Lake City Center.
The proposal, prepared under the supervision of outgoing Washington County Sheriff William Hutton, answers some questions community members have had about what police coverage in the city could look like under county supervision rather than the Forest Lake Police Department, but other

The recent City Pages article that featured comments by Wyoming Councilwoman Linda Nanko-Yeager and Councilman Dan Waller at the City Council’s Feb. 22 work session was again the subject of public comment at the March 22 council meeting.broadstreet.zone(48036);
Dan Iverson spoke during the open forum, saying, “I happen to be the mayor’s husband.” He added that he wanted to share his thoughts about the recent City Pages article and the Forest Lake Times article that referenced it.
“Unlike the resident that commented at the last board meeting and the Forest Lake Times reporter, I actually listened to the audio from the work session, all 2 hours, 3 minutes and 6 seconds of it,” Iverson said.
Iverson said the City Pages piece was an inaccurate reflection of the meeting and said the Times should not have cited it for its story about the remarks (learn more in the March 16 Times article
