Johnson cleans up at men’s state gymnastics meet

Southwest Junior High eighth-grader Blake Johnson, a Level 8 gymnast competing for the Plymouth-based Mini-Hops team, brought home seven medals, a trophy, two certificates of achievement and an athletic letter from the USA Gymnastics men’s state championship meet at Bloomington Jefferson over the weekend.broadstreet.zone(48036);
Johnson medaled in all six individual events in the Level 8, 13- and 14-year-olds category. After taking third in the floor exercise (11.9), he swept to victory in the pommel horse (12.4), rings (12.6), vault (11.3), high bar (12.1) and parallel bars (11.0). His combined total of 71.3 earned him another gold medal in the all-around.
The Mini-Hops team also earned a state title with a grand total score of 217.5.
A straight-A student, Johnson also earned the state academic award.
Johnson has been involved with gymnastics for most of his life and has been competing for eight years.
